All Over The Map

Growing up reading was a big part of everyday life. Nearly every room in the house had a bookshelf (The bathroom was exempt, though it did have magazines; and the dining room).

Recently I have started reviewing books as well as anything I use, receive to test, or just think is worth a try. My husband and son both help me to test things and to find new things.

Creative and Fun Learning

THE POWER OF THE WORD - THE ISLAND OF EMPATHY (English Edition) (Hugo THE HAPPY STARFISH - Island Adventures 2: Educational Children's Book Collection) - Suzy Liebermann

The artwork is wonderful. It's colorful and nicely drawn. As are all the books in this children's educational series. The pictures help the child to further understand the words and the feelings associated with each page.

This is an excellent tool every parent, guardian or teacher, should be using to help their young loved ones learn how their words can impact others. It makes the learning process fun and enjoyable while teaching feelings, emotions, and empathy.

Great First Installment

Haven: A Stranger Magic - D.C. Akers

The opening chapter jumps right into things compelling the reader to find out what is going on. The next chapter makes a halt, and it continues slowly till the ending chapters where it picks up again. While it is slower moving for the middle chapters, it is so with a purpose. It builds up the story and creates a relationship between the reader and the characters. The ending leaves the reader wanting to know what is happening in regards to Sam, his family, and their past.

It is written in third person, mostly from the point of view of Sam. I found that while I loved the story line the writing threw me off a bit. There were some grammar and spelling mistakes, and some of the paragraphs seemed like they could have been organized better. While I enjoyed the story sometimes I found myself mentally editing.

Adventurous Short

Terra Vonnel and the Skulls of Aries (Epic magic fantasy fiction short story series) - D.C. Akers

I love the concept of vampires (and other assorted supernatural beings) as pirates. While this particular story did not delve much into the land and it's supernatural inhabitants hopefully the next will. I can't wait to see what happens next in Terra Vonnel's adventure and what other sorts of creatures and dangers she will face.

There is not much time to become fully acquainted with each character, so the only ones that really matter are the Sea Vixen and her first mate, Coven. Just enough is told about each of them to allow the reader to care about what happens.

Author D.C Akers paints vivid picture with every word. Although short it's very intelligent and captivating. I could see this making a great film. I could see this being a great film someday.

Bright and Colorful

PRINCESS SOPHIA AND THE FROG (Educational Children's Book Collection) - Suzy Liebermann

When I read this book to my son he asked me 'Why is the princess sad momma?'. At the end he clapped because the princess had found what she had been looking for and was no longer sad. Princess Sophia and the Frog helps teach children about emotions by engaging them in her adventure to find friends and happiness.

I love the artwork found on each page! The pictures are simple, keeping the pages uncluttered. All the words vary in size as well as placement, making them perfect for young minds learning to read. My three year old loved pointing out the colors, characters, and letters he recognized. These bright colorful pages will keep any childs attention!

Princess Sophia and the Frog is enjoyable by all small ages and genders, and adults will enjoy the interactive reading time with their young one!

Magic Novel

River Magic: Flint and Steam - J.M. Brown

Although written as a young adult novel this story of adventure and friendship is enjoyable by all ages. It was refreshing to read a young adult novel that does not revolve around a love story.

JM Brown writes with a delightful skill that causes this story to maintain intelligence while still being a quick read. Each page has new adventures that will make the reader want to keep going and not put it down. Truely a talented author.

I would love to read more and highly recommend this novel.

Creative and Fun

Finding Monsters (Guardians of Esurack) - Liss Thomas

Liss Thomas creates a fascinating and intriguing world within the fairly short contents of this novel. There is magic, mythical creatures, and imaginative creations. The idea is a different twist on the monsters under our beds. The characters are easy to form attachments with, though in no way perfect, making them easier to believe.

It is simply written but not to the point of treating the reader like a child, making it a fast, easy, and enjoyable read. My only complaint would be that it was much too short. I will definitely be purchasing the next installment.
